Her jewels were just recently sold at Doyle Auction House for tens of thousands each piece. The gown is slightly too small in the waist for the dressform, and a bit too large in the bust (heck of a figure on this women!! The "train" could have been worn in other configurations.LUCKILY I found a photo of the original owner wearing the gown!
'm ALWAYS on the hunt for Victorian sidesaddle habits! just two areas of small holes (one lost in folds, the other at the hemline - see photos) and a bit of lining tearing inside skirt hemline. Even the satin INTERIOR of the bodice is gorgeous!!It's fairly lightweight, so not a winter coat, but rather an evening coat. The beauty (beside the velvet) is in the swing of the design at the lower back. This is easily seen by looking at the photo of the interior to see the seaming and then volume of the lower back skirt. Here's an interesting article to give you some idea of how important she was to fashion of the era! https://rbkclibraries.wordpress.com/2013/07/12/margaine-lacroix-and-the-dresses-that-shocked-paris/ If you look about, you will find some Lanvin-Castillo coats for sale, but if you look closely, you will see that those are NOT the originals, they are authorized reproductions. An original Jeanne Lanvin / Antonio del Castillo MUSEUM QUALITY and DESIGN heavy (very heavy! The lining is original and has a few minor spots here and there... The label is off on one side, so will need a stitch or two. ) wool coat in a deep tomato red color with black silk lining.Castillo designed for the House of Lanvin from 1950-1962. NOTE: The Rudi Gernreich iconic topless black wool bathing suit from 1964 currently sells in the $7,000-$8,000 USD range These two bathing suits are nearly as important for ANY Gernreich collection! I've seen this photo dated as late as 1975, yet other info states likely earlier, so it's somewhere between 1968-1975.
This is probably your ONLY opportunity to add these to your collection. There is some question as to the date on this suit...
The black silk thin patterned velvet coat is in great condition!
The pattern in the velvet can only be seen under certain lights, otherwise it just looks like a solid black velvet.
This one is a riding habit with the skirt that can be worn down as a skirt, or hiked up (as you see) with the silvertone skirt lifter (that came with it). There is one button missing as well (so I would move the top button down and wear a large pin (cameo) at the top buttonhole.... There is a handwritten tag inside that reads "Lepper Gardner".
If you google that, there was a well-known artist and mapmaker in Maine with that name, so perhaps it came from her estate? The BOOTS will be sold SEPARATELY as they are quite special, would have been quite expensive when new and are certainly collectable.
Three large black buttons close the coat at the high empire seaming.
